Ultimate Sports Connection was established to develop strength in both the mind and body of today’s youth through sports, while cultivating self-confidence and discipline to better serve and engage with the community around them.

Abra Slater
Abra Slater is a charismatic gymnastics leader with several decades of experience in building and coaching highly successful programs that serve girls and boys of all ages and abilities.
In addition to having worked with several Olympic coaches, Dick Mulvihill, Linda Metheny, and Mark Young, Abra has coached and developed athletes of all abilities from beginner to Elite level and is also an award-winning choreographer.
She is the co-founder and co-owner of Ultimate Sports Connection., started and ran successful TOPS programs and was the driving force behind the and an acclaimed Xcel program development in Northern California.
Prior to opening USC, Abra served as the Director of Golden Bear Youth Gymnastics at UC Berkeley for 8 years. Under her leadership both the recreational and competitive programs thrived, growing the Golden Bear finances from a $500,000 deficit to a 2-million-dollar program a year program.
Programs developed by Abra at Golden Bear include a Junior Olympic ( USA Junior Development ) competitive team of more than 70 athletes, started the Talent Opportunity program (TOPS).
Earlier in her career, Abra was the Owner / Director of Hawaii Gymnastics, where she also started a successful TOPS program. She was Head Coach / Director at West Valley Gymnastics (home of 2-time Olympian Amy Chow) for over 8 years, where she ran successful Competitive and TOPS programs.
Abra has also had the honor of coaching numerous athletes who have been awarded college scholarships at many renown Universities including:

She holds several USAG certifications, including Meet Director and Safety, as well as CPR certified.
Abra is focused on her local communities participating in multiple Muscular Dystrophy events and was the founder of the Hawaii Gymnastics Foundation, (who’s mission was to further, and make affordable to all, the sport of gymnastics). She is also the founder and director of Spirit Of The Flame, an internationally known gymnastics competition, in its 19th year.
Monica L. Subieta
Monica Subieta is the magnetic co-founder and co-owner of Ultimate Sports Connection. Her career in gymnastics has spanned more than 25 years and includes serving for many years as the Director of Compulsory and Developmental Gymnastics for Golden Bear Youth Gymnastics at UC Berkeley, working closely with young gymnasts to reach their athletic potential.
Prior to joining Abra at Golden Bear, Monica founded Platinum Gymnastics in Texas, where she helped to establish and build numerous successful programs, and before that coached for many years at Capital Gymnastics. Monica founded and ran the Talent Opportunity Program (TOPs) at Golden Bear, Platinum and Capital, and served as the TOPs State Manager for Texas.
She holds USAG certifications in Junior Olympic Team Coaching, Safety and Risk Management, SafeSport, Pre-school Fundamentals, Fundamentals of Gymnastics Instruction and Skill Evaluation, and is also certified in CPR.
Monica received her B.S. in Sport Management from the University of Texas and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Ultimate Sports Connection with complementary experience in show teams, acrobatics, pre-school and recreational gymnastics.
Travis Newman
Co-Founder, Co-Head Coach, Optional Team Coach, Facilities & Medical Director
Travis Newman co-founder/co-head coach/optional team coach, as well as our Facilities and Medical Director. He has been doing gymnastics his whole life and has a background in high level gymnastics, both as a gymnast and as a coach.
Travis has been fortunate enough to learn from some of the top-level coaches in the gymnastics space. He has been coaching for more than 15 years and is a specialist in trampoline, tumbling and bars. He has had athletes on the Junior and Senior USA National Gymnastics Team and the Mexico National Team. He has had the privilege of coaching gymnasts from all over the country and the world, elite gymnasts from countries like: Australia, Canada, Denmark, England and Mexico
Travis has an extensive medical background, as a licensed Paramedic and a certified Functional Movement Therapist (F.M.S). His many certifications include:
- Personal Training, Strength and Conditioning
- FEMA Certified
- Olympic Weightlifting
- CrossFit level 1&2 coach
- Background in Sports Medicine and Nutrition
Travis was a Cirque Artist and a USA National & World Cyr Wheel Team Member.
